New York, NY, October 10, 2024 — The Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI) is excited to present FOSI Briefs the States: New York’s Approach to Online Safety, an in-person panel and roundtable discussion today, Wednesday, October 10th, from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM at Civic Hall, located at 124 E 14th St, New York, NY. This event brings together key experts and policymakers to explore the challenges and opportunities presented by two groundbreaking pieces of New York legislation: the SAFE for Kids Act and the New York Child Data Protection Act.
State Senator Andrew Gounardes, co-sponsor of the SAFE for Kids Act, will be a featured speaker at the event. Senator Gounardes has been instrumental in championing legislation aimed at protecting minors from harmful content and enhancing online safety measures across the state. His involvement underscores the significance of New York's leadership in this critical space.
The state has positioned itself at the forefront of online safety with the passage of these critical laws, designed to protect minors from the harmful effects of targeted content and safeguard their personal data. Today’s event will focus on the practical implementation of these laws and the real-world implications they may have for children, parents, and digital platforms. With the ongoing national conversation about online privacy and child safety, this event couldn’t be more timely.
The discussion will feature expert speakers who will provide diverse perspectives on the impact of these laws:
The panel will be moderated by Marissa Edmund, FOSI’s Policy Specialist, who will guide the discussion on potential challenges, unintended consequences, and innovative approaches to making these laws work in practice.
"New York has taken bold steps to safeguard children in the digital age, but legislation is just the start,” said Stephen Balkam, CEO of FOSI. “Today’s discussion is about turning these laws into real, tangible protections that make a difference in kids’ lives.”
This event is a unique opportunity for policymakers, advocates, industry leaders, and press to engage directly with key stakeholders shaping the future of online safety. Attendees will also have the chance to network with peers over lunch, which will be served at the event.
