On March 11th, FOSI filed comments with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in response to a request for comments on proposed modifications to the COPPA Rule. The request focuses on how the FTC can improve, update, and modernize its regulatory guidance for the 26 year old children’s privacy law.
In its comments, FOSI highlighted the important role that Congress plays in protecting children’s online privacy and safety, where the FTC can learn from its regulatory cousins such as the UK's ICO, and the delicate privacy and safety tradeoffs raised by age assurance processes.
