Partnership Advances Shared Commitment to Family Safety in the Age of AI

Washington, D.C., June 22, 2026 — Today, the Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI) announces that OpenAI has joined as its newest member company. As AI becomes part of everyday life for children and families, both organizations are committed to ensuring young people can benefit from these technologies safely, with empowered parents and responsible industry practice at the center.

OpenAI is an AI research and deployment company whose mission is to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity. The company builds AI tools that help people solve problems, learn, create, and be more productive, while working to ensure these technologies are developed and deployed safely and responsibly.

“AI is already part of family life, and how we shape it for young people matters enormously. OpenAI brings both the scale and the commitment to make a real difference in that work, and we are excited to have them as part of the FOSI community.” said Stephen Balkam, Founder and CEO of FOSI.

OpenAI’s membership reflects a sustained commitment to youth safety built into how the company develops and deploys its products. That includes age-appropriate defaults and differentiated model behavior for users under 18, parental controls, and family and educator resources that support responsible AI use at home and in schools. OpenAI has also advocated for comprehensive youth AI safety frameworks covering age-appropriate protections, family controls, transparency, and accountability, and has called for the establishment of an international Youth AI Safety Institute to bring governments, researchers, civil society, and industry together around common guidance and shared standards.

“Young people are growing up with AI as part of everyday life, and families deserve tools, guidance, and safeguards they can trust. FOSI has long brought together parents, policymakers, researchers, and industry around practical approaches to online safety. We are proud to join that community and to keep learning from experts as we strengthen age-appropriate protections, parental controls, and resources that help teens benefit from AI safely.” said Lauren Jonas, Head of Youth Wellbeing, OpenAI.
