Sacramento, CA., May 8, 2024 — The Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI) is pleased to announce FOSI Briefs the States: A Golden Opportunity for Online Safety, a panel discussion and networking reception today, Wednesday, May 8th, from 1:30 pm to 4:00 pm PDT at the Hyatt Regency Sacramento located at 1209 L Street.
California’s pioneering initiatives in online safety and privacy regulation, exemplified by the Age Appropriate Design Code (AADC) and the privacy-preserving Delete Act, have garnered widespread attention. These proactive measures not only set new standards for privacy and safety but also serve as a catalyst for national legislation. Recognizing the significance of safeguarding online experiences, FOSI is dedicated to fostering meaningful dialogue among stakeholders to shape the future of online safety.
FOSI Briefs the States: A Golden Opportunity for Online Safety offers an opportunity for participants to delve into the implications and challenges surrounding California’s landmark policies. Tami Bhaumik, Roblox VP and FOSI Board Chair, will open the event, followed by a keynote address from Assemblymember Josh Hoover. A panel discussion, moderated by Marissa Edmund, Policy Specialist at FOSI, will follow and feature local experts including Holly Grosshans from Common Sense Media, Larry Magid from ConnectSafely.org, Nichole Rocha from Rocha Public Affairs, and Matt Soeth from All Tech Is Human. Tami Bhaumik
Tami Bhaumik is the Vice President of Civility and Partnerships at Roblox where she spearheads the platform's digital civility initiative and works to foster a global community of internet safety leaders to ensure good digital citizenship on Roblox. To establish a healthy and safe community, Tami is focused on providing kids, teens, parents, and caregivers with skills needed to create positive online experiences, in partnership with the world's leading safety and industry organizations. At Roblox, she empowers platform users to self-govern and create a confident, resilient online community with the knowledge and tools to create positive experiences for themselves and others in the metaverse.
Marissa Edmund
Marissa Edmund is the Policy Specialist at the Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI), working with the policy team to monitor emerging issues in tech policy and contribute her policy and research expertise to ensure the online world is safer for children and families. Prior to joining FOSI, Marissa spent two years at the Center for American Progress as the Sr. Policy Analyst for Gun Violence Prevention focusing heavily on gender-based and domestic violence. Before that, Marissa was the Policy Coordinator at the National Network to End Domestic Violence where she was able to actualize her passion for family safety by conducting research, engaging membership, and educating lawmakers on ways to support survivors of domestic violence. Marissa holds a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC).
Assemblymember Josh Hoover
Larry Magid
Larry Magid, Ed.D., is an internet safety advocate and technology journalist. He is CEO and co-founder of ConnectSafely.org, a Mercury News columnist, and a frequent guest on TV and radio in the U.S., U.K., and beyond. He spent 20 years as on-air technology analyst for CBS News and 19 years as a syndicated columnist for the Los Angeles Times, and has also contributed to the New York Times, NPR’s All Things Considered, and BBC World News TV. Larry is author or co-author of nine books, including the best-selling Little PC Book, Cruising Online: Larry Magid’s Guide to the New Digital Highways, The Fully Powered PC, and The Electronic Link. In 1993, while helping search for kidnapping victim Polly Klaas, Magid became the first person to post a missing child’s image online—an effort that led to 20 years on the board of the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. As CEO of ConnectSafely, he continues to be a leading voice for family online safety and youth digital rights.
Nichole Rocha
Nichole is the principal at Rocha Public Affairs. She brings with her extensive knowledge of the legislative process and technology policy. Most recently as the Head of 5Rights US, Nichole helped secure the unanimous passage of the Age Appropriate Design Code in two states. Prior to that she served as Chief Consultant to the California Assembly Privacy and Consumer Protection Committee and as Counsel to the California Senate Judiciary Committee. Nichole received her Bachelor of Arts degree from UC Berkeley and her Juris Doctor from UC Davis.
