Senior Policy Analyst, Open Technology Institute at New America

Sydney Saubestre is a senior policy analyst leading the data and privacy work at New America’s Open Technology Institute (OTI). Her work centers on privacy and responsible data use, ensuring emerging technologies serve the public good while protecting vulnerable communities. Before joining OTI, she was a Mellon Fellow in Critical Data Studies at UCLA and led an ACLU study on digital surveillance in schools. She also worked at UC Berkeley’s Human Rights Center on foster care reforms and advanced education and policy initiatives with the Oakland Mayor’s Office and as a Coro Fellow.

Sydney’s writing and analysis has appeared in Foreign Policy, Newsweek, U.S. News, and Ms. Magazine, among other outlets. She serves on a range of privacy, data, and technology policy advisory councils and coalitions.
